Announcing: The Complete Guide to FamilyTreeDNA; Y-DNA, Mitochondrial, Autosomal and X-DNA

I’m so very pleased to announce the publication of my new book, The Complete Guide to FamilyTreeDNA – Y-DNA, Mitochondrial, Autosomal and X-DNA.

For the first time, the publisher, Genealogical.com, is making the full-color, searchable e-book version available before the hardcopy print version, here. The e-book version can be read using your favorite e-book reader such as Kindle or iBooks.

Update: The hardcopy version was released at the end of May and is available from the publisher in the US and from Amazon internationally.

This book is about more than how to use the FamilyTreeDNA products and interpreting their genealogical meaning, it’s also a primer on the four different types of DNA used for genealogy and how they work:

  • Autosomal DNA
  • Mitochondrial DNA
  • Y-DNA
  • X-DNA

There’s a LOT here, as shown by the table of contents, below

This book is chocked full of great information in one place. As an added bonus, the DNA glossary is 18 pages long.

I really hope you enjoy my new book, in whatever format you prefer.

  1. This is awesome. I actually prefer the hard copy so I have made a note to check for it end of May. Thanks for all the work you do for everyone else!

  2. I, too, would prefer the hard copy because, low-tech as I am, I have never figured out how to do a split screen and all that; and I imagine I’ll want to be looking at the book while looking at a genealogy website.

  3. Congratulations on the new book. Please take pride in such a great accomplishment. You contribute much to the world of family history and genealogy. Thank you.

  4. This is awesome Bobbi! I don’t know when you find the time to write a book when you are traveling and writing this blog. I wish I had your energy!!!!

  5. It is already impossible to receive a DNA kit in France, and now I cannot buy your book.
I can connect with a VPN, but unable to finalize the payment, neither by credit card nor by PayPal, which seems logical.
    I’m hoping for a French week…

  6. I’ve been looking forward to this book. Your blog is such a good read, and your style so engaging. The Table of Contents of the book is comprehensive with everything I want to read about and to refer to. Congratulations on completing this masterpiece!

  7. The book sounds great and is really necessary. I always purchase my e-books through amazon.com as I have gift vouchers with them. Will the e-book eventually be sold through Amazon?

    • Not anytime soon. Typically, authors and publishers are somewhat reticent to release ebooks on Amazon, at least initially, because Amazon makes the pricing very unattractive to both authors and publishers. My other book was not available as an ebook for months after the hardcopy version at the publisher, and is still not available as an e-book on Amazon.

  8. Do you know if it will be available in Amazon stores outside of the US?

Any plans on a supplement to replace the information on FTDNA’s soon-to-be-obsolete Family Tree functionality with the MyHeritage integration?

    • My other book is available outside the US through Amazon. As for the new features, I will cover those on my blog when they are released and at some point will combine them in a second edition. It will not be this year and probably won’t occur for some time. We had to draw a line in the sand or the book would never have happened at all. The new tree should not be a lot different from the user’s perspective.

Do I need to setup a VPN from the Netherlands to the US??

    • That’s what I was referring to at the end of the article. I have no idea if a VPN would work or not.

      • I was able to connect from France to the publisher’s site using a VPN, but it was impossible to finalise the purchase using my PayPal account.

  10. Has the publisher set a price for the hardcopy version, and if so, do you know what it will be?

  11. Congratulations Roberta. I’ll wait for the hard copy and purchase several, one for my local library and one for my local genealogical society. It would be great if others did the same so it could be made available to genealogists who may not follow your blog.

  12. So grateful. Loving the glossary, its concise definitions, and the footnote links to your blog articles for in depth discussion on a subject. Great for sharing with project members (including due credit to you every time of course!) . The book is at the top of my list already as a prime educational resource for new and (more importantly?!) would-be testers. THANK YOU once again.

  13. A wonderful book, quite obviously. I’d like to buy an e-book BUT obviously not possible from Finland / the European Union. Can you please ask them to release at least Finland, for buying this book.

  14. Massive congratulations on the new book Roberta – I’m waiting for the hard-copy sales to launch at the end of this month, so I’ll look forward to seeing the fruits of all your hard work & expertise then! : )

  15. I’m so excited to hear about this publication and will buy it as a book once it’s available. Old as I am I really need to have it in print so I can go back and forth, page by page. And share it with my children so we can talk about how we can move forward. You’re great Roberta!!

  16. HI Roberta
I am very interested in this new book of your; looks great.
What file format is the ebook in? pdf?

    • ePub books come in the .epub file extension and epub readers need to be used for those files. Microsoft has one for computers. iBooks for Apple devices. If you need it, the publisher has instructions for how to connect the file to an ereader.
