I wondered exactly how many DNA sessions were at RootsTech this year and which ones are the most popular.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t easily view a list of all the sessions, so I made my own. I wanted to be sure to include every session, including Tips and Tricks and vendor sessions that might only be available in their booths. I sifted through every menu and group and just kept finding more and more buried DNA treasures in different places.
I’m sharing this treasure chest with you below. And by the way, this took an entire day, because I’ve listed the YouTube direct link AND how many views each session had amassed today.
Two things first.
RootsTech Sessions
As you know, RootsTech was shooting for TED talk format this year. Roughly 20-minute sessions. When everything was said and done, there were five categories of sessions:
- Curated sessions are approximately 20-minute style presentations curated by RootsTech meaning that speakers had to submit. People whose sessions were accepted were encouraged to break longer sessions into a series of two or three 20-minute sessions.
- Vendor booth videos could be loaded to their virtual boots without being curated by RootsTech, but curated videos by their employees could also be loaded in the vendor booths.
- DNA Learning Center sessions were by invitation and provided by volunteers. They last generally between 10-20 minutes.
- Tips and Tricks are also produced by volunteers and last from 1 to 15 minutes. They can be sponsored by a company and in some cases, smaller vendors and service providers utilized these to draw attention to their products and services.
- 1-hour sessions tend to be advanced and not topics could be easily broken apart into a series.
Look at this amazing list of 129 DNA or DNA-related sessions that you can watch for free for the next year. Be sure to bookmark this article so you can refer back easily.
Please note that I started compiling this list for myself and I’ve shortened some of the session names. Then I realized that if I needed this, so do you.
Top 10 Most-Viewed Sessions
I didn’t know whether I should list these sessions by speaker name, or by the most views, so I’m doing a bit of both.
Drum roll please…
The top 10 most viewed sessions as of today are:
Speaker/Vendor | Session Title | Type | Link | Views |
Libby Copeland | How Home DNA Testing Has Redefined Family History | Curated Session | https://youtu.be/LsOEuvEcI4A | 13,554 |

Libby Copeland must be absolutely thrilled. I noticed that her session was featured over the weekend in a highly prominent location on the RootsTech website.
Sessions by Speaker
The list below includes the English language sessions by speaker. I apologize for not being able to discern which non-English sessions are about DNA.
Don’t let a smaller number of views discourage you. I’ve watched a few of these already and they are great. I suspect that sessions by more widely-known speakers or ones whose sessions were listed in the prime-real estate areas have more views, but what you need might be waiting just for you in another session. You don’t have to pick and choose and they are all here for you in one place.

Thank you!! Maybe they will have time in the coming weeks to improve the categorization and ability to find classes. I am sure they were very challenged to make Rootstech Connect Happen.
They did an amazing job all things considered.
This is amazing! Thanks for all your time and energy on this–I’ll definitely use it.
Roberta, you amaze always! Thanks for all you do to keep us informed.
My question is this: I have tested my DNA at both Ancestry and Family Tree DNA. Should I still upload my DNA from Ancestry to FamilyTree DNA?
Thanks,
Mimi Holmes
No, if you’ve tested there, you don’t want to upload. Do upload one or the other to MyHeritage.
Thanks!
Roberta, this is unbelievably generous of you to do all this work for us. I look forward to watching many of these classes, and I am ever so grateful. Thank you! ❤️❤️
Thank you, Roberta! You are awesome!!
Thank you so much for the time and energy that went into this. You are awesome!
Roberta,
This is amazing! Thank you for this list, for your presentations, and for all your other [extensive] contributions to the genealogical community. We are so lucky to have you!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU 🙂
Fantastic!. Thank you so much!!
Thanks Roberta, I’ve already watched several of those and have many in my Playlist. Still good to see some I have missed noticing.
Cheers
Sharyn
Thank you. That is useful in finding seminars we would not want to miss. I have lots to look forward to. I enjoy having the opportunity to digest and apply a seminar after viewing it before moving on to the next one. I really appreciated how organized this conference was and how smoothly it ran. We were very fortunate to have such a wonderful resource made available for free.
.
What an incredible service you provide to the DNA community and especially for your subscribers! Thank you for your diligence in keeping us informed.
I know this took a huge amount of work. Thank you so much!! It’s exactly what I needed!! I always look forward to your blogs as they are filled with excellent information. Thanks again!!
Very nice list! Surely, RootTech must have a similar list. Thanks for your indefatigable efforts to help us in all things DNA!
They had one list of the regular sessions and one of the Learnjng center, which I published earlier, but no links and not separated out into DNA. No vendors and no Tips and Tricks on that list. So I made one for us. Plus I wanted to see which sessions were popular.
Thank you Roberta, I messaged during RootsTech with a Cousin that was listed in my 1200 Cousins online. He is a medical doctor in Sweden and I live in the Chicago area. He is my closest match on FTDNA and we have both done the BigY700. He will be as thrilled as me to see this work you have done. He has been very busy and was sad to have to miss so much of the seminars. Now with you spending so much time to our benefit we can watch them!
Thank you so much for this organized list, Roberta. I’ll be forwarding it to the Genetic Genealogy Special Interest Group at the Toronto Branch of OGS. I’m always on the lookout for resources to share. I wanted to add in one more that changed my research this past weekend; Nicole Dyer: How to use AirTable for a DNA Research Log. As a matter of fact, I simply copied your list into a new AirTable and now I can customize it and share with relatives and friends. I am also using AirTable to track progress on confirming (or denying!) my tree matches from RootsTech 2021. You are tentatively one of my 9th cousins through William (Jonathan?) Bentley (1640-1720), but I still have to verify that line.Take care and thanks for all your wise and wonderful work educating the genie community.Georgie Thompson KennedyMarkham Ontario Canada
I ditto all the thanks that been expressed. This was a very interesting experience and You certainly helped to get many of us through with your recommendations. You are extremely generous with your suggestions and lists of what we might want to consider. Thank you , thank you, thank you!
Merci beaucoup Roberta!
How wonderful! Thank you so very much!
Roberta, thank you so much!!! Your work is very much appreciated 🙂
Roberta, your awesomeness knows no bounds! Thank you so much for this great list and for everything you share with us through your blog.
Just wanted to add my sincere thanks for all the time spent creating this list. You are so appreciated.
The YouTube link for Beth Taylor’s “DNA and Genealogy Basics” presentation is not correct. It leads to a presentation in German.
Oh no. I’ll check it.
The original session is erroneously linked too. I’ve notified RootsTech. Thank you.
Thank you Roberta! What an amazing gift to all of the rest of us I transferred an Ancestry DNA kit to FTDNA and am trying to unlock it and can find no place to put the in the discount code and get the $9 price. The kit finished processing a few days ago. Any suggestions or secret links!
I believe it’s in the checkout if you click on the “coupon” link to open the box.
Order the unlock. On the checkout page, click on coupon and the box opens up.
Thank you for sharing all the links.
OMG, this is amazing! I copied the list, created a file on my iPad so now I can go right down the list and check (literally) each presentation as I watch them.
The RT playlist was a good idea but there was, as far as I can tell, no way to mark what I had watched. With your list in a PDF file, I can check off each class as I watch.
I am also amazed and impressed that you found all the different sorts of classes. After reading your blog about the various categories of presentations, I went looking for the m with little success.
Once in a while I would run across the Learning Center or Tips and Tricks but could never really figure out how to dependably find them, then keep track of what I wanted to watch and what I had watched without making s separate list somewhere when a simple check mark or color change would have worked.
Thanks again and love your blogs. Tho they are long, they are always worth reading.
Thank you.
Roberta, I have been on ftdna for years now and I have thought of going into an additional provider. I have read your blogs but I was wondering what you would suggest as the better judging what is offered for the cost. Ancestry or myheritage…or another
You can transfer to MyHeritage for free, so by all means do that. You can test at Ancestry which has a very large database.
I used your list to listen to your wonderful presentation which led to this question: What are the limits on MyHeritage’s triangulation? Lower 7.0 cM? Upper: 1500 cM?
I believe they will draw the bracket for any size triangulated segment that appears on the browser, but there may be a lower limit. I’ve never asked.
Thanks so very much!
Very helpful, Roberta! Thank you so much for your practical efforts for us newbies in genetic genealogy.
As usual, fantastic help, THANK YOU. I have been recommending for years, at genealogy DNA presentations I give in my little corner of the Sierra foothills northeast of Sacramento, that anyone interested in DNA subscribe to your blog, because of the work that you put into your writing AND because your writing is so clear an understandable. You are a gift to the world of DNA genealogy.
Thank you so much! It’s comments like this that keep me going.
