DNAeXplain Archives – General Information Articles

dna interestA couple weeks ago, I said that I would publish lists of the articles in the DNAeXplain archives sorted by new tag categories.  Recently, I published the first of those lists, the Historical or Obsolete articles.  This week, it’s time for the General Information articles.

General Information articles are articles about DNA and genealogy, but they don’t presume you are actually working with DNA results.  They can be and often are simply of general interest.  As you can see, there’s a very wide range of topics covered – health, rocks, dogs, Picts, your DNA as music…and lots more.  Enjoy!

  1. I hate to repeat myself, but I am having a hard time believing this blog: it provides real information, written in a clear style with metaphors that clarify things for the genome conceptually impaired, and just keeps doing those things. I came across accidentally it while searching for Estes ancestors. What a happy accident. I’ve noted that garden writers all speak of “garden oases” these days. Well, it might be trite, but this blog is a blog oasis. Thanks for writing it.

  2. Hi Roberta,

I have been reading this blog for a month or so now and have found it very interesting. You must have spent many many hours researching your ancestors!

I have a newbie question that I’m hoping you can help with about triangulation. We have a FTDNA match who shares 80 centimorgans with my Dad and 120 centimorgans with my Nan. I have found a paper link which I am 95% confident in (pending sending off for birth certificates) that makes her my Dad’s 3rd cousin. As she matches both my Dad and Nan does that mean the match is triangulated or do I need to find someone else? if we need someone else, would our match, my Nan and the new person have to match on exactly the same segment or would it be OK if say Person A matches Person B on chromosome 2, B matches C on chromosome 8 and C matches A on chromosome 11?

    Thanks very much

    Gareth Nelson

    • Well, given that I don’t know who Nan is, I can’t really say. However, if Nan is a close relative of that match, then it’s not really a triangulation for a distant ancestor. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not a valid match. A triangulation to confirm that DNA to that ancestor would be from someone who descended from another child of the ancestor, for example.

  9. Roberta, Was trying to find right article to post this question but could not. Question is whether Genos DNA sequencing results via Promethease report showing 25 variants relevant to Ashkenazi Jews has any significance. That is, does this indicate some AJ ancestry or just a coincidence? And same question for variants related to Native American traits. Thanks, Deborah

      • I wasn’t referring to the medical issues but rather the fact that issues associated with Ashkenazi Jews even showed up at all (since I wasn’t aware of any AK ancestry). Anyway, I just thought it interesting. Thanks.
