Ancestry Reverts ThruLines to the Original View

Just a quick note to let everyone know that Ancestry has reverted ThruLines back to the original, legacy version, and has obsoleted the new pedigree view. I wrote about the new version in the article Ancestry’s ThruLines Has a New Pedigree View just three days ago.

  • If you didn’t yet have the new version of ThruLines, you won’t receive it because it has now been obsoleted.
  • If you DID have the new version, everyone has now been reverted back to the original or legacy version, including the important “Evaluate” feature that was missing in the new version

It’s always a good thing when vendors listen to their customers.

That said, I hope Ancestry is working on a new and truly “improved” version that combines the best features of both views, including Evaluate, as suggested by many customers and blog readers, and provides customers with the option to default to either view.

  1. Just on a call with Crista. New version will be coming back. Ancestry making some changes based on feedback

  2. I didn’t even have a chance to check it out. Did they mention what the complaints were that made them pull it so quickly? I wonder if there were privacy issues that popped up. That’s the only thing I can think of that would require it to be yanked like that.

  3. Bummer! I could related to the pedigree view so much better! I wish they would have kept it that you could toggle back and forth

    • I really liked it. Yes, much easier to visualize. But, It was so small on a macbook. Just couldn’t make it any bigger on a laptop..maybe they will bring it back revised with a top panel that moves up and doesn’t block seeing it? That was a fast turnaround.

  4. Could you please explain the current logic of Thrulines? As I understand it, earlier versions were based upon user-submitted trees. Is Ancestry now using autosomal triangulation to suggest Thulines or are they presenting another view DNA matches?

      • I really wish they would not rely so heavily on copied, crowd-sourced trees. Many are not correct but treated as truth.

        • Unless you pay for their professional research they do nothing to verify the trees used for ThruLines. I have 100’s of matches with people where the grandparents of my 3rd great-grandparents is wrong, proven wrong by different Haplotree branches. To date, when I ask for documentation I don’t get a reply. Not even, sorry, I don’t have any/

  5. When I went to DNA matches, I saw the option to view tree with DNA matches. It created a similar view to the discarded beta Thrulines view.

    • ThruLines itself is not going away. Just the new version. If you read the article I wrote a few days ago, you’ll see the difference immediately. What you are seeing now is the version before a week ago. That’s not disappearing. The new version has already been reverted back.

  6. Thankful they reverted back, it just wasn’t as easy to use since I’m elderly and the small view was difficult to navigate.
