  1. Thank you Roberta, for the heads up. I agree that MyHeritage has done a wonderful job for us genealogists, and continues to improve their tools and add historical record sets to their databases. This free DNA raw-file upload opportunity is especially important, now that AncestryDNA has started restricting the transfer of data. I am an active MyHeritage member anyway, but I did take advantage of this to upload some of the other DNA data sets that I manage.
BTW, I talked to David Vance, and Dave has just published the 2nd edition his Genealogists Guide To Y-DNA Testing, which has a lot of new and updated content. Can’t wait to get my copy of that one, have a wonderful week!

  2. I really like MyHeritage, but I have questions about their most recent update of the ethnicity estimates. Prior to the update, they showed me and my father as having ancestry from Iberia and from Eastern Europe, which is accurate. After the update, my Iberian ancestry disappeared, although my dad’s stills shows as almost 10%. Also after the update, my dad’s Eastern European ancestry disappeared, and mine changed to Ashkenazi Jewish.

  3. I uploaded to Myheritage and defintely played the long game because it took forever and a day to get DNA matches in the triple digits. The day finally came when cousins from Europe tested. One of those cousins, a 2nd cousin, is European actor/singer Pasquale Aleardi. The discovery of that match coincided with a discovery in my own house.

While I was digging through some stuff belonging to my grandfather and great-grandfather, I found a photo of an Italian couple in front of a church. It turns out that they were Pasquale’s parents and my grandfather must have been at their wedding.

I started talking to the DNA matches via Google Translate and eventually we all became friends on Facebook. Pasquale’s aunt Caterina and I talk via email all the time and she gave me several pictures and told me interesting things about the family. It was cool. I still talk to her and I am probably going to email her soon. =D

Meanwhile, I got some second cousins on my mom’s side and it turned out they are on the Legault side of the tree. I talked to them for a little bit. That was fun.

See? Playing the long game works!!

  4. Do you know if the “access to all DNA tools and features – forever” is for existing members of MyHeritage who uploaded some time ago?
