Family Tree DNA Sale – Week 4 – Recreating Their Name in DNA

It’s Monday and new gift coupon codes should be arriving in your mailbox today that are valid on top of the holiday sale prices.

2015 ftdna week 2

If you are a Family Tree DNA client, and you didn’t receive your e-mail, just sign on to your account to discover your gift!  Just click on the gift-wrapped box.

My cousin sent me a very nice note this past week that I want to share with you.  She told me that an old Chinese man shared this with her years ago.

“You die twice.  Once when the breath leaves your body; the second time when people stop saying your name.”

My cousin went on to say, “Just think…your ancestors not only have their names still being said, but you are re-creating their Name in DNA!  Now that is “keeping them alive”.”

I love that – Recreating their Name in DNA!!!!  And DNA is forever!  In a way, we’re making our ancestors immortal.

That’s what you’re doing by DNA testing.  So, buy those kits, purchase those upgrades – you are freeing and recovering the history of your ancestors for eternity!!!

Remember, you can order kits in advance and just take them along to family functions.  Family Finder tests work on males and females both.  You can add additional tests based on the gender of the person later.

If you have coupons this week that you won’t be using, please list the coupon code and what it applies to in the comments.  If you use a coupon, list that on the comment too.  Coupons are only good once each.  Click here to redeem coupons, upgrade or order kits.

Update:  Please note that if your gift box link in the e-mail doesn’t work, just sign on to your personal page and that works just fine!!!

  1. I’m waiting for the arrival of my Y111 kit. I’ve also ordered Y111 kits for my uncle who is the oldest known living male from each of my mother’s lines and a second cousin who is the oldest known direct line male on my mother’s mother’s father’s family. Recently I submitted and received the results for FTDNA’s mtDNA Full Sequence test.

About a year and a half ago I transferred my Ancestry autosomal test to FTDNA and was preparing to do so with eight other kits from relatives I’ve had tested. A few days ago there was a link to transferring those tests on the ‘sales’ page with the other FTDNA tests. It is now gone and I can’t find a word about making such transfers on the website.

Also I’ve tried to contact FTDNA support by phone and have found it is only available for the most part on the West Coast when most people are working. I guess they think the only folks interested in genealogy are retired.

Though not a fledgling in life, I am so in genealogical research and particularly in genetic genealogy. My approach may not be traditional but I had hoped to do the testing and learn about it from it and its purveyors. Maybe that was naïve of me.

The primary purpose of the testing was to try to get through three of those proverbial ‘brick walls’. Two dealing with illegitimate births. The other is the identity of my maternal great grandmother.

One illegitimate birth is my great grandfather on my mother’s father’s side. He was born in England and we aren’t positive about his mother’s identity, though nearly so. The other is my 2X great grandfather on my mother’s mother’s father’s side.

I would like to find someone in the Seattle area who is knowledgeable in the use DNA results from Ancestry and FTDNA and can tutor and advise me (for a fee) in the understanding of DNA in genealogy in the hope it will be the sledge hammer that knocks down those ‘brick walls’..

    • Cliff – Check out the website and join the DNA Adoption group on Yahoo. They specialize in helping people find ancestors when there are illegitimate births involved, as well as other ‘brick walls’. Use the methodology taught on their website and ask questions of their ‘search angels’ in the group. They will help guide you in your search. There are no fees.

  3. Do the mystery gifts actually expire on Sunday of each week as the gift says? I thought last year they were good until the end of the holiday sale at the end of Dec.

  4. $50 off Big Y R10LN1ZWTUV9

    $10 off mtFull Sequence R10K58O1VILB

    $10 off mtFull Sequence R9SABS5ICBO
Odd, but this one says it expires 12/7/2015 at 11:59PM CT. The other two expire 12/13.

      • It was still that way last evening but this morning there is a completely different coupon with 12/13 expiration.

        $10 off Y37, Y67, or Y111 R10MKSK5O9UT

    • Forgot about this when I first replied to it. Some codes are given after a purchase so they would likely expire on a different day than the rest of the coupons.

      • If you check the email FTDNA sent to group admins on Nov 15, it says: “You’ll get a new Mystery Reward every week as well as after making a purchase.”

Given that others have stated that some of their coupons expired on a different day than the usual Sunday, this makes sense. Maybe it only counts on purchases made by the original owner of the coupon on an existing kit they manage.

  5. Do the mystery gifts expire at the end of each new week? Seems like last year you could used any of the codes that people posted for use of others.

  6. I have an abundance of $10 off Y37, Y67, Y111:
    $10 off 37, 67, 111:

And one of $10 off Full mtDNA

    • Thanks for this link.

I hope FTDNA looks at this. They might notice that $20 coupons seem to drive sales but no one is jumping up and down for a super awesome $5 coupon. Even $10 coupons seem to be totally ignored except for Family Finder.

Although they can see their own sales and I guess they how many $5 coupons they are redeeming.

      • FTDNA is interested in making a profit. Sales make people buy. But sometimes just knowing there is a sale even if it isn’t that big of a discount can cause people to buy.

Them seeing that spreadsheet could have the opposite reaction you want. They could decide to keep discounts a bit lower so not too many people take full advantage of the discounts by mass sharing. This way they make a little more money if people are forced to pick a smaller discount or nothing at all later.

Besides, that spreadsheet doesn’t have the whole story. People could simply be keeping the few $20 coupons and not even adding them to the document. Surely some projects are keeping their coupons within their projects.

    • I got frustrated looking for the “Big Y” test on FTDNA’s website as well. It’s just not listed anywhere. What I think I figured out, though, from reading some other posts is that you must take a Y-37, -67, or -111 before you’re able to take the “Big Y”. If you haven’t taken those tests, “Big Y” is not even listed as an option for you.

      • Big-Y is only shown as an order option on kits that have previously done a yDNA test. But, you can call FTDNA support and place an order for Big-Y, or any test, on the phone. You can give them a discount code over the phone.

  9. Hi Roberta, Questions: Having 30+ sets of shared ancestors in the last 400-500 years (paternal & maternal lines) plus, a handful of individual (grandparents) shared, create problems with the DNA results? Also, what about the “old country” “shared great grand parents? What does that, do to the DNA results? Does it make ones DNA a reflection of the DNA pooling 500+ years ago. Thanks, Richard Little

  10. Does anyone know if you also get discounts if you are upgrading, or only if buying new kits? Do the mystery coupons count toward upgrades, too (I hope)? I have left a question on the site, but that usually takes a day or more, and I thought someone here might know. Thank you.
