Amazing map, I wonder how many of the languages were documented, recorded or “dictionaried”, and how many are still spoken or studied today? What a loss of creativity and beauty of expression are lost when another tongue disappears from the earth. bpb.c
Looks like this is prior to the movement of the Navajo/Apache into the 4 corners region.
Important to remember this is a best informed guess of a highly-qualified snapshot. Languages are constantly in flux, and none of these cultures remained static nor sprang from the ground in these areas, but were from the first continental immirgrations moving, changing, interacting, warring, and most of these languages were not held back from change by a mandated written form..Amazing how many different families and different cultures. Fascinating to speculate what this might have looked like a millenium or two earlier.
How come most of the SE seems to be uninhabited/unknown/out of area?
